  • My new Granddaughter

    And her name is.....

Sue Elen!  Sue for me and Ellen for Grandma Edith...(my first and her middle names.)  fits pretty good.  I am not sure how Sue is spelled but Elen only has one "l" since a double "l" in Spanish is pronounced "y".  I just can't wait to see her!

She was born on my and my mother-in-law's birthday's--Oct. 2!  What a special gift.

  • Dixie comes home!

Our little girl has been begging for a pet for a couple of years.  A kitten was first on the lists.
    "NO!!!!"
    "Please!"  "WHY not?"
She 'baby sat" an infant Canadian goose orphan for Ethan and Joanna in June and loved it.  Then she and her best friend found a robin baby that had fallen from its nest behind the church.  It was cold and wet.  They placed it back into the nest, only to find it out on the ground again.
She brought that home only to have it fall from the nest she had made in her windowsill.  It fell between the wall and something else and smothered.  She was heartbroken.
Also, my brother's wife had visited us and had 2 small dogs.  The smallest was a Maltepoo that has a great personality.  Lavina fell head over heels in love with Josie.  Now she HAD to have a puppy!
Her daddy relented after he heard what Joanna, the former schoolteacher had to say about children with pets.  Its her opinion that children with pets do better in school.  (Should we get all of our children a pet? was his reaction.)  He thought maybe a dog but no cats.
We looked around and the only cute dogs available were very expensive.  No way could we afford that.  I told Lavina that if God really wanted her to have a puppy HE would see that she got one in our price range.  I encouraged her to pray about it.
About 6 weeks ago a friend of mine called and wondered if Lavina could have this little black poodle.  Her owner died of cancer and Dixie needed a home.   Our little girl couldn't have been happier!  The wait was intense...trying to find a way from a distant state but finally it worked out.   Lavina sat by the window the last hour, waiting and waiting.
The welcome was worth it.  The travel-worn puppy had finally come home!
She is very lively but she has met her match with our children, especially Jonathan.  I think Dixie finds that she actually needs a rest by the middle of the afternoon.
Thanks to April, we have a very happy little girl!
I can't seem to paste the pictures.  I'll try later.

  • Where there's a Will there's a Way!

loom 004 loom 002 I've spent the past 2 days dressing my table loom.  It is hard, time-consuming work.

A couple of years ago, I was asked to do the weaving demonstration at Lattin's annual festival; Sugar on Snow.  It was a smaller version of my own: A countermarch Glimakra floor loom.  I enjoyed that immensely, although, it did seem as if Vernon and I spent most of the day underneath it trying to get the tie-ups right.  (I learned a lot about weaving and about our own loom in the process.)

Due to lack of space and other issues the Lattins decided not to use Amber's Glimakra again.  Oh, bummer!  I really wanted to do it again.  So, this past time we used an inkle loom and wove a belt.  I was not impressed with that and it seemed like the people didn't show too much interest in it.  I had to wonder how many Colonial people wasted their time weaving belts?  So, I decided to buy a small table loom for that event.

I was thrilled when Ebay decided to give me $450.00 to spend on Ebay!  Finally, I had sufficient funds to get the loom.  So, once I had all the equipment I needed, the real work began.  I strung my thread on the warping board, trying to do it just right but for odd reason, when I began to put it on the loom, it got sort of tangled.  So, I threaded it, and pulled it out to the other end of the living room.  I put it on dowels on both ends, using a folding chair legs to keep the dowel straight.  I had to use a milk can for weight to keep the chair from sliding around.  I am thankful for big rooms.

The method was unorthodox for sure but it worked.  Maybe next time I'll be able to do it right from the warping board to the loom.  Anyway, "Sugar on Snow" here I come!

    A Winner

Some time ago, our friend Rich was saying on Xanga that he had won $500 to spend on Ebay and he was trying to decide how to spend it.  I thought, "Wow!  How do YOU rate?"
Well, I too, was given a gift from Ebay.  I was informed that since I took a survey for them, I was selected for a $450 gift certificates.  Of course, I was skeptical and didn't really believe it was true and I still had my doubts when I received the certificates in the mail.  I was afraid that this was a hoax but as I cautiously tried it out, I found that it was Real.  So, I purchased 9th grade Switched on School house for Melisa and also bought a table top weaving loom to use for the Lattin's Sugar on Snow colonial days fest that they have every February in Beaver Bay, Minn.
Two years ago I did the weaving on Lattin's Glimakra counter march loom.  It is a smaller version of ours and I really enjoyed it.  But it is big enough to take up a LOT of space and there are other things to consider when using it that Susan (Mrs. Lattin) decided not to use their loom for the event again.  That was disappointing to me, but I see her side of it so we tried an Inkle loom this year.  Inkle looms are nice but they only make belts.  I wasn't too impressed, after all, how many colonial people made decorative belts?  Maybe some, but I doubt it.  So, I thought a nice little table loom should do the trick.  They are built very similarly to the floor looms and I think the people would be able to imagine how weaving homespuns are done.  I was watching them on Ebay and had a list of things that I needed to buy first before spending for a loom.
Then, along comes the gift certificates!  How nice.  So, I took the plunge and bought one.  The seller had bought it at a yard sale so there are a couple of accessories missing, such as the shuttle.  I am sure I will be able to find those things separately.  Now, I am anxious to set it up and try it out.
Today, Kendra Lily, and 2 friends from church who all will be 20 in a couple of weeks are on the way to Guatemala for almost 3 weeks.  They will be meeting my brother's daughter in Miami who will be joining them for the adventure.  Bon voyage!  I will miss her terribly, I am sure.
This past Friday, Vernon took us (the youngest 5 of our children) to Oshkosh to the Air show.  They have one annually the last week of July.  He's been wanting to go since we've moved here so this is a dream come true.  It was very interesting.  Seemed like thousands of airplanes there.  Of course, I enjoyed the stunts best.  That day, it was featuring women pilots in the stunt planes.  I wouldn't be able to endure all the rolls and flips.  How do people handle such roller coasters???  I get motion sickness on a simple swing!
I also enjoyed the "mission plane" booths.  Such as Jaars of Wycliffe Bible translators, Fly 4 Life and MAF.  The last one had stuff on Jim Elliot, Nate Saint and their friends who were murdered by the Auca Indians years ago.  I wish I'd had a lot of extra money so I could've bought some of their books and DVDs.  Oh well, as it was, we had to end up buying a serpentine belt for the van and we were so glad that NAPA had a booth so Vernon could order the belt and have it delivered to the airshow.  (They thought of everything, Sleuth!  )
Well, I must run.  I'll try to post some pictures of the show later.  Melisa filled my memory card and ran down the battery of my camera....not to mention that she did the same on her camera, too.
I am having a Back to School sale this week so I'd better get busy.  Have lots to do.  Just got a huge shipment of Tropical Breeze fabric last week plus a bunch from Mook's.
This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.  Tootles, Kim
PS  the quote of the week is this:
Jonny and Daddy took a walk last Sunday and on the way home stopped by to visit a neighbor who is extremely overweight.  Jonny informed me that the man had no shirt on and looked like an ape, he had that much fur!

About Me

  • I love the Lord, my family and friends. I have been married nearly 27 years to a wonderful man who also loves God. We have been blessed with 9 lovely children ages 25-to newborn. October 2006, we were blessed with a wonderful daughter-in-law. Since then we have added a little granson to the family. Our oldest is courting a wonderful young man from MN. My interests are mostly fiber arts: knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, sewing, piecing quilts, etc. I am a machine knitter and am known as the "Sweater lady". I used to have my own line of sweaters that were imported from Guatemala but I quit selling wholesale. I do sell some here in our small fabric store. We also have a Bent & Dent store. My better half is a minister and has a mechanic shop. He dreams of doing diesel (Cummins) conversions.
